World War I Armistice Centennial Anniversary and Commemorative Events
Saturday, November 10th and 11th, 2018
Mount Olivet Cemetery/ Memorial Park
Frederick, Maryland
In honor of the 100th Anniversary of the end of World War I (with the Armistice Peace Agreement on November 11th, 1918), Mount Olivet Cemetery and American Legion Francis Scott Key Post #11 kindly invite you to attend commemorative events to be held over Veterans Day Weekend.
The event will feature two, guided-cemetery tours of local WWI veteran graves, a wreath-laying ceremony at Memorial Park, Echo Taps, and a evocative lecture session back at Mount Olivet. A 20-minute concert will also be performed by Echo-Taps musicians on Sunday from 1-1:20pm at the Francis Scott Key Monument.
The Sunday afternoon WWI lecture session will be held in the Francis Scott Key Memorial Chapel on the cemetery grounds (located roughly 50 yards behind the FSK monument). This event will run from roughly 3-5pm and feature two Hood College professors steeped in the subject of World War I —Trevor Dodman and Corey Campion. Both gentlemen will provide an overview of the Great War, along with presenting samples of powerful literary connections from the conflict. Chris Haugh will also join the conversation, adding local Frederick color and participants. Dodman and Campion recently won an NEH (National Endowment for the Humanities) grant to hold a three-week seminar for educators this upcoming summer, and will also be guiding a tour of World War battlefields in Europe. (Read More on the project)
Listen for downtown Frederick churches to ring their bells at 11am on Sunday the 11th, echoing the scene 100 years ago as peace was cheerfully signaled to the nation and our community.
All events are free, and open to the general public.
